IS TMS THERAPY RIGHT FOR ME?

Do you suffer from drug resistant psychiatric disorders?

Do you have Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)? What are your options?

Use of antidepressants has a efficacy of about 50% and with each failed antidepressant, the efficiency of a subsequent medication is shown to decrease. Furthermore, we must consider the issue of side effects. Medication can have hard-to-tolerate side effects, from insomnia to appetite changes, weight gain and sexual dysfunction. These effects are mostly related to the systemic nature of antidepressants which enter the bloodstream and affect the whole body. These and other side effects can significantly harm the patient’s well-being and quality of life, and can negatively impact their self-image.

Do you suffer from obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), is a chronic debilitating disorder with a detrimental effect on the quality of life. It has a 2% lifetime prevalence. Many patients experience delay in recognition and treatment, and the disease has with high rates of patients that fail to achieve symptomatic remission despite therapy. Current treatment recommendations include serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SRIs), including selective SRIs (SSRIs) or clomipramine, and exposure/response prevention cognitive behavioral therapy strategies.

Many (40%–60%) patients do not show clinically meaningful response to an SRI, with only a third showing response after switching to another SRI. Other treatment strategies include augmentation with antipsychotics and use of adjunctive treatments, such as exercise, motivational interviewing, and cognitive therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy.

However, many patients remain symptomatic and impaired. In a multicenter study of OCD patients treated with an SSRI, Brainsway dTMS significantly improved the clinical situation of 38% of the patients with a partial response in 58% of the treated patients. This improvement was maintained one month after the completion of the treatment Based on the results of this study, in August 2018, FDA granted approval for the Brainsway dTMS H7 coil to be used in adults with OCD.

TMS might be the treatment of choice for you if

In January 2013 Brainsway received FDA approval for marketing of the dTMS device with the H1 coil for the treatment resistant MDD that failed at least one antidepressant during the current episode. The approval was, in part, granted according to the results of a study published in 2015 proving a remission rate of 32% and a response rate of 38% in a sham controlled study.

You may be a candidate for dTMS if you have one of these conditions (major depressive disorder or OCD) and

  • You unsuccessfully tried another approach (medication, therapy, ECT, rTMS)
  • You cannot tolerate the side effects of the medications you are on
  • You want to be off medication or on minimal amount of medications for other reasons (pregnancy, health concerns, travel, study)

Brainsway dTMS may be useful for you for other health conditions ( chronic pain, smoke cessation, addiction, bipolar disorder), however these indications are NOT FDA approved and will likely NOT be approved or paid by your insurance company.
