FDA Approved Conditions

In 2008 FDA cleared the first TMS device for treatment of depressive disorder that failed to respond to one antidepressant. In 2008 ,FDA approved Brainsway Deep TMS for the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Major Depression

Depression is the major cause of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. The lifetime prevalence is 20 %. Depression risk in women population is four times higher than men.

The diagnosis of depression is mainly clinical, based on the psychiatric interview, that includes a very detail personal and family history and assessment of mental status. There a number of rating scales filled out by the provider and by the patient assisting in the screening of symptoms and their severity. Blood work and other tests are performed as appropriate, case by case.

The are many factors that can cause, exacerbate or maintain the symptoms of depression. Those factors are typically a combination of genetic vulnerability, medical, psychiatric conditions and stress.

A plethora of emotional and physical symptoms that affect the patient and families well being, and have social implications. Suicide is by far the most severe complication.

Medications, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy are used for the treatment of depression for the last century. TMS offers a safe technology, with good tolerability and without systemic side effects.TMS treatment must be specific to the patient profile.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

This disorder is characterized by recurrent intrusive thoughts and/or repetitive behavior that patient considered irrational but impossible to resist. The lifetime prevalence of OCD is about 2.3% among the adult population of US and it is a major source of disability worldwide.

OCD diagnosis is performed through a detailed psychiatric interview, that includes thorough medical history from the patient and significant others. Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) is used to rate the severity of symptoms.

The cause of OCD is not clearly understood but is believed to be the result of a combination of genetic, infectious and environmental factors.

Obsessions and compulsions are cornerstone symptoms. They can coexist or can present independently. Disorders with similar presentation are hoarding, trichotillomania, skin picking, body dysmorphic disorder. Addiction and suicide are major complications.

Combination of medications and Cognitive Behavior Therapy are the treatment of choice for OCD. Brainsway DeepTMS treatment improved significantly the symptoms of OCD of patients that did not have a satisfactory response from the above strategies.
